Participation of women in politics brings much needed change in perspective and approach toward problems faced by society. This is not to say that women are inherently maternal and feminine in their thought process. Anybody who believes that women do not have ability to take tough decisions knows nothing about history of women in politics. A woman lawmaker does not, by virtue of her gender, automatically become more sensitive or caring to people. Women have the same set of flaws that men have.
However, there is no denying that the brain of women functions in a different manner as compared to men. In such a scenario, they certainly will bring new arguments into the debate. Whether the arguments clinch the debate or not is a different thing. Those who speak of role of women in politics often skirt over maternal responsibilities of women. For such persons, the maternal responsibility is either a curse or something that need not be considered as even a factor in the equation.
This gives ammunition for critics to talk down the role of women in government and politics. A Prime Minister or President who becomes a father in office will be in a position to execute his duties without any difficulty. On the other hand, a female leader will be compelled to opt for maternity leave. This is often cited as justification for excluding women from the top post.
Well, there have been instances where leaders were indisposed and their deputies stepped up and ruled. From attack on Ronald Reagan to failing health of Chief Minister of a southern Indian state – this was never considered a big thing as they were men.
Well, the ability to attend office on a daily basis can hardly be stated as the right way to assess performance of any politician or law maker. Hence, to deride potential of women to contribute in governance of the world on basis of such flimsy and tenuous arguments does not make sense. A woman taking up such a job will analyze pros and cons before proceeding with a specific course of action.
