There are many myths surrounding the capabilities of women as far as their role in governance and politics is concerned. Some myths are negative while others tend to portray women in an unrealistically positive light.
Women are not corrupt
Corruption has nothing to do with gender. It is just a manifestation of greed and desire to own something far beyond abilities and requirements. There are many instances where women have been accused of and found guilty of corruption. The fact that women are capable of crime, as is evident from our crime statistics, clearly indicates that there are no better or worse than men when it comes to having criminal tendencies
Women will not fight war
This is perhaps the biggest myth amongst them all. War is nothing but furtherance of politics using violent means. Women have, in the past, showed that they are equally adept at making wars and negotiating peace. A look at women from days of Cleopatra to Condoleezza Rice shows women do not shy away from wars.
Women cannot become a successful politician without support of husband
This presumes that women must have a husband in the first place in order to become a politician. Definitely not so. There is no denying that support of spouse will be very beneficial for the person running for public office. However, this holds true for men as well. Women do not suffer from any significant disadvantage merely because they do not have support of a man. There have been instances of unmarried women and widows performing their duties in public life without any difficulty.
